Paweł Gmyrek, PhD

Senior Researcher

I am a social scientist with a strong interest in digital technologies. My research explores how they shape our societies, especially the world of work. I’m particularly focused on the implications of generative AI for employment, occupational structures, and labour market transitions.

My work sits at the intersection of social science, data science, and economics. I use a mix of traditional statistical methods and innovative AI tools to analyse large, often messy and non-traditional datasets. I also generate semi-synthetic dataset, build new AI exposure indicators, and experiment with ways to make labour market patterns more visible and meaningful. I especially enjoy telling stories through creative data visualizations.

I currently work as a Senior Researcher at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, where I study these evolving dynamics in global labour markets. I collaborate with international institutions, including the World Bank and leading universities, as well as national research institutes such as NASK in Poland. My publications span topics such as multilateral funding, aid effectiveness, human rights, and the changing relationship between technology and employment.

Education

I hold a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Geneva, a Master’s degree from the Warsaw School of Economics, and a Diploma in Hispanic Studies for Foreigners from the University of Málaga. I’m fluent in Polish, English, French, and Spanish. I also speak some Portuguese and can read German, though I’m most comfortable discussing technical work in English and Polish.

My passion for research and data science combines with love of outdoors and adventure sports. As a licensed ski and kitesurfing instructor, I take particular interest in how technological progress is pushing the boundaries of gear and performance, especially in skiing, kitesurfing and wing/kite foiling.

The Story in Data

For me, data is a way of seeing — it reveals patterns in how technology and work evolve, and it helps make sense of complex change. In this section, I share visualizations from my research that aim to bring these stories to life, with context and code for those who want to go deeper.
